Your Wedding Day Hair: Expert Advice on Using Hair Extensions

As a bridal hairstylist, I’m here to help my brides navigate the intricacies of bridal hair, and this includes the wonderful, but sometimes confusing, world of hair extensions and ensure you have the perfect look on your big day.

With so many options available, extensions can offer you a fabulous range of styling possibilities—from creating added volume and length to delivering dramatic transformations or every so subtle “you wouldn’t know they’re there” hair styles.

Here’s some expert advice to help you decide which type of extensions will best complement your bridal look – and that nobody will know you’re wearing them!

Which Hair Extensions Should You Consider?

Bonded Hair Extensions

Bonded hair extensions can be a tempting choice, especially if you’re dreaming of long, flowing hair. However, it’s important to note that these hair extensions are generally designed to be worn with most of the hair down. If you envision having part of your hair up for an elegant up-do, the bonds might become visible, which could detract from your overall look. Should you be interested in bonded extensions, I highly recommend a trial run. This allows us to work out exactly how much of your hair will be styled up and to determine the best placement for the bonds to keep them hidden. Thia way you’ll be able to let your hair extension specialist know exactly where – and where not – to put the hair extensions.

Clip In Hair Extensions

Many brides opt for clip in hair extensions because they offer fantastic versatility. On your wedding day, these extensions can be added exactly where needed—whether you want extra volume at the back for a half up, half down style, or simply desire a bit more length and thickness overall. A major advantage is that they can be easily removed after the celebrations, ensuring you’re free to enjoy your day – and your honeymoon – without worrying about any extra weight or discomfort.

Tailoring Hair Extensions to Your Hair Type

If you have naturally curly hair, you might be concerned about how extensions will blend with your texture. Even the softest curl can sometimes make your hair appear shorter than it is. In such cases, we can invest in a couple of wefts that are pre-curled which are then artfully blended into your own curls. This technique ensures a seamless look that can help brings out the best in your natural curls.

Real Versus Synthetic Hair Extensions

When choosing hair extensions, I advise opting for 100% human hair. Synthetic hair might be more budget-friendly and offer a decent colour match, but it tends to reflect light excessively. In flash photography, synthetic hair can look overly shiny and unnatural—a detail we definitely want to avoid in your wedding photos. By investing in high-quality human hair extensions, you’re ensuring a more realistic, flattering finish that will stand up beautifully to every snapshot.

Budget and Quality Considerations

The cost of hair extensions can vary widely, with prices ranging from as little as £20 to over £500. We can explore options together, whether it’s sourcing from reputable suppliers like American Dream or considering local Afro-Caribbean hair shops that offer a fantastic match for your hair shade and texture at a more affordable price. In many cases, you may only need one or two wefts rather than a full set, especially if you plan on wearing your hair in an up-do.

It’s also worth noting that purchasing extensions with the clips already sewn on can save us both time and hassle. Although these might be slightly more expensive, they ensure a professional finish without the added effort of attaching the clips yourself.

What Is Remy Hair?

In the realm of high-quality hair, Remy Hair stands out as the gold standard. Because the cuticles are kept intact, Remy Hair maintains its natural shine and softness—qualities that are essential, particularly if you’re considering bonded extensions. While the hair used in clip in extensions might not always be of Remy quality, as long as it’s real and the colour match is perfect, you will still achieve a stunning result.

The Importance of a Trial Run

Before your wedding day, a trial run is absolutely essential. This session allows us to finalise your chosen style, decide on the best type of extensions for your look, and ensure that the colour and placement are just right. If you’re planning to change your hair colour before the wedding, we’ll make sure the extensions match perfectly, so your bridal look is flawless from every angle.

Keeping Your Hair Extensions in Place

A common concern is whether clip in extensions will remain securely in place throughout your busy day. Rest assured, there are simple techniques we can employ to ensure they stay put. For instance, a bit of backcombing at the roots can create extra grip, and a light sprinkle of Osis Dust-it where the clips sit can further prevent any slippage. With these methods, you can enjoy your celebrations knowing that your hair will look stunning from the ceremony to the last dance.

Special Considerations for Afro Hair and Box Braids

For brides with Afro hair, hair extensions can open up exciting styling possibilities, such as creating beautiful box braids. This technique not only offers a protective style but also looks great for weeks. By carefully selecting and blending the right extensions, your braiding specialist can create box braids that enhance your natural beauty while providing a modern twist on a classic style.

Sew-In Weaves: A Dramatic Transformation

If you’re considering a dramatic change, sew-in weaves are another fantastic option. The best results are achieved using high-quality Remy hair, which seamlessly blends with your natural locks. Sew-in weaves can give you length, volume and versatility – perfect for achieving anything from sleek, straight styles to soft, romantic waves. I personally don’t put sew-in weaves in – but I definitely style them – so don’t hesitate to get in touch..
